The Planning Journey
Brett’s dream to build the perfect pool shed started back in the summer of 2021, when he first installed the pool in his backyard.
The building was put on the backburner for a few years, and then Brett began looking into his options for custom pool sheds. He reached out to a variety of builders to get bids; Tuff Shed wasn’t even on his radar yet!
“Over the last two or three years I was getting quotes and bids and they were astronomical,” he said. “I thought, ‘It can’t be that hard, all I really want is a shed that’s finished.’”
So, he switched gears and started looking at pre-built sheds that could be delivered. Eventually Brett decided to go check out the Lean-To buildings from Tuff Shed. He wanted a fairly large pool shed, so he started talking to Michael Turner, Sales Design Consultant from Ankeny, IA. Michael explained that Tuff Shed could customize a building however Brett wanted.
Taller? Bigger? More windows? You got it.
And Brett’s custom pool shed was born.
The Design Process
Brett worked closely with Tuff Shed to ensure his pool shed included everything he wanted.
The 10 X 30 Premier Lean-To was outfitted with a roof pitch upgrade, wall height increase, gable eave upgrade, and transom windows. But that was just the start.
“I had this big, custom sliding glass door,” said Brett. “It’s a bi-fold door and it all opens. Then we added these new transom windows above the door and large windows on the front side as well.”
All that natural light allows for a seamless blend from indoor retreat to outdoor oasis.
They didn’t stop there.
Brett wanted custom siding and sconces that matched his house, along with extra brick molding around the door.
“After the design team at Tuff Shed mocked it all up, it looked perfect,” said Brett. “Everybody was really easy to work with; they were reliable, and everything was communicated well.”
The building went up in a splash (oops flash), and then it was time to work on the inside.
The Interior Finishes
The inside of the shed got as much attention as the exterior.
First, Brett started lining up the electrical and putting in a mini split unit for heating and air conditioning. He spray-foamed it all himself and put up shiplap and drywall. They then added a kitchenette, including a movable island that could be used inside or outside.
They installed custom lights and a ceiling fan, both controlled by an app. Of course, the pool shed got a few TVs.
The Finished Product
The last step on Brett’s Tuff Shed journey—enjoying the new space! Brett’s pool shed also functions as an office, leisure space, and family room. It was finished right before March Madness, so he was able to watch the Hawks go up against the Huskers in the Sweet 16. (He said that’s his favorite moment in his Tuff Shed so far!)
Beyond watching games, movies, and more in their backyard building, Brett and his family love to host and entertain.
“It’s all about experiencing it with your friends,” said Brett. “That’s what makes the memories.”
Plus, whenever they’re out of town, they encourage friends, family, and neighbors to come over whenever they want.
“We love the space, it turned out exactly how we wanted,” said Brett. “It was awesome working with Tuff Shed. I have a few friends that got pools after me, I’m hoping this may have sparked something in them.”
