Storing 1,400 Bikes with Wheel Fun

Kevin Adams volunteers at Wheel Fun, a nonprofit in Arizona. They aim to get school kids off electronic devices and outdoors onto mountain bikes. 

Wheel Fun partners with public schools to offer a free program for the schools and their students. Wheel Fun maintains the bikes, helps find a coach to lead a mountain biking team, and stores the bikes at the school. 

Up to 1,400 kids are riding bikes at over 38 schools across Arizona. The program teaches kids how to ride bikes, teaches navigation skills, goes on trail rides, and covers trail etiquette and trail stewardship. 

Our bike storage is going to need a bigger shed. 

1,400 students mean a LOT of bikes. When Wheel Fun needs to set up bike storage at a new school, Tuff Shed is the first place they call. 

They’re nine sheds deep and counting. They buy Premier Ranches, at whichever size is the biggest they can get without a permit. (For their part of Arizona, that’s usually a 10×12”.)

The 16” On Center Framing (the standard for house design) is the perfect distance for installing bike hooks. Wheel Fun drills bike hooks into the studs to store bikes vertically and adds cubbies for kids to store their hydration packs and helmets.

They don’t bother with custom upgrades—the biggest need is a secure, dry place to store their bikes. (One teacher did commission a mural for the side of their Tuff Shed.)
