Organizing Your Tuff Shed: Pegboard Wall

We all have that one project. The one that you wish would just magically get done with the snap of your fingers.  

For some, that project is organizing the pegboard wall in your Tuff Shed.  

Lucky for you, with help from professional organizer Lela Burris, we’ve put together a list of tips to help you get all your tools and supplies hung up and tidy on your pegboard.  

Whether you have a variety of small garden tools or a large collection of lawn gear, knowing how to hang items on your pegboard will help you maximize space in your backyard building.  

Keep reading and before you know it, your pegboard wall will be neat and organized (just like magic).

Organize Items by Category

Before just hanging everything on the pegboard wall willy-nilly, organize your items by category. For example, keep all the drills, saws, and hand tools in one area, the garden tools in another, and the safety gear in acluster. You’ll often use like items together, so it’s more convenient to grab what you need in one spot instead of moving around the entire wall.  

Keep Commonly Used Items at Chest Height

The items you reach for the most should be the most convenient to get to. Keep these items in the height range of your neck to your waist.  

Items you use occasionally should be kept towards the bottom, not as easy to reach as waist high, but still manageable without a ladder.  

Finally, store items you use the least often at the top. If you only use it once or twice a year, it won’t be too much of a pain to get up on a ladder to grab it. Things with long handles are also great to keep up high. 

Distribute the Weight Evenly

At Tuff Shed, our pegboards are held in place by screws on wall studs. Although they are pretty sturdy, it’s a good idea to distribute the weight of the items you’re hanging evenly. You don’t want to put all the heavy things on the top or one side because it could warp. Space out heavy items with light items in between. 

Make Loops with Zip Ties

Oh, the magic of zip ties. Some items might not have a hole that is large enough to hang on a peg, so, loop a heavy-duty zip tie around them to make them easier to hang. This is also helpful for things that don’t sit flush enough to stay in place.  

Don’t Store More than Two Different Items on the Same Peg

Even if you can fit quite a few tools on one peg, that doesn’t mean you should fill it up. A pegboard makes it fast and easy to grab what you need, but if you have to remove a shovel, rake, and hoe to get to the broom, you’re probably going to leave the rest of those items sitting on the floor instead of putting them all back.  

Limit each peg to a maximum of two different items. That way, you’re much more likely to put the extra item where it belongs. After all, the whole point of the pegboard wall is to stay organized!  

Fill in Gaps with Baskets

What about the items that you can’t hang up? Try wire or metal baskets. Make the most of your space by filling in empty room on your pegboard with baskets of varying sizes to hold gloves, safety gear, equipment parts (weed eater string, mower accessories), outdoor toys, and small fertilizer bags.  

Don’t Label Where Things Go

Chances are you’ll rearrange your pegboard every so often. Between seasonal changes, new tools, getting rid of old items, etc. there’s no need to label where everything goes—because it’ll change! Get in the habit of putting things back where they go right after using them. Your shed will stay cleaner, and you won’t struggle to remember where items belong if you leave it on the floor for a week or more.  

Clean the Pegboard Seasonally

With all the dirty tools stored on your pegboard wall, it can get grimy pretty quickly. Once a season, use a leaf blower or compressed air to blow off any dirt or debris on the pegboard. A+ if you take everything off beforehand, but you don’t have to!  

Get Organized

Well, that wasn’t too bad! It may have been a little trickier than snapping your fingers, but organizing your pegboard doesn’t have to be rocket science.
